Description
According to the changes in the political economy of Myanmar, tl-re
international trade policies had changed through time. The study is mainly concerned
with the structural changes in imports of Myanmar. The major objectives of the study
are: to examine the patterns and trends of Myanmar's imports since independence; to
consider the determinants which influence the behavior of Myarunar's irnports; to
investigate the evidences of structural changes in Myanrnar's imports at both
aggregate and disaggregate levels.
The study covered the periods of market-based economy, socialist economy
and market-oriented economy, using the secondary data. Structural breaks are tested
at the points of changes. After the points of structural change have been confirmed,
price and income elasticities of demand for irnporls were estimated by a log-linear
model which provided constant elasticity estimates for each period. Since price and
income elasticities of demand for imports are important for trade policy, an attempt is
made to formulate a long-run model by taking advantage of data stationarity.
