Description
The study is a public survey on knowledge, awareness and observation of
human trafficking in Mandalay Region, Myanmar. Human trafficking in Myanmar
occurs in the context of large-scale internal and cross-border migration. Most of the
young women from Bago Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Magway Region, Mandalay
Region, Kayin State and Kachin State were found to be trafficked in new trends such
as forced marriage and surrogacy to China due to the influence of many brokers. The
objectives of the study are (a) to study human trafficking in Myanmar and (b) to
investigate the awareness of human trafficking in Mandalay Region, Myanmar. The
study was focused on a public survey on 150 people in the Mandalay Region. The study
found that human trafficking is widely practiced because of poverty, lack of jobs and
migration. In addition, lack of education leads to less knowledge of how to protect
oneself from problems such as debt and forced labor. Most of the respondents have
little knowledge and awareness of human trafficking. Therefore, the government should
implement the human trafficking awareness program on television and social media
networks. The study suggests a definite need to educate people on the dangers of illegal
migration, provide them with opportunities to travel abroad legally, and help them look
for better job opportunities through bilateral agreements. In addition, there is a need to
create job opportunities that can generate decent income for people within Myanmar
itself. Therefore, it is necessary to select and implement effective human trafficking
prevention process models by the Central Body for Suppression of Trafficking in
Persons. In doing this, if the public cooperates in unity, human trafficking in Myanmar
can be reduced and controlled.
