Description
Diplomatic relations between Japan and Myanmar were established in November 1954. Since then, there have been many bilateral visits between Myanmar and Japan. The two nations have built the friendly relations for a long time. Japan provides the full support by bringing together public and private sectors in Myanmar. Moreover, Japan started the economic assistance to Myanmar as the form of war reparations in 1955. The big amount of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) cemented this special relationship of two countries. ODA played a leading role in both the economic and diplomatic relationship of two countries. ODA to Myanmar became an important tool to revitalize Japan’s economy. Although the aid was meant to help Myanmar’s nation building process, the aid served Japan’s economic interest as well. Japan was able to create a market for its own goods, as well as promote investments in Myanmar which helped in its own economic growth. ODA has become an instrument of Japan’s foreign policy and ODA volumes are the essential tools of Japan in checking and balancing Chinese power in Asia. The research question is “how Japan’s development assistance programs help Myanmar by providing cash and materials for Myanmar’s development sectors?” Moreover, it will include the achievements and challenges of Japan’s ODA in giving assistance to Myanmar.
