Description
In the coastal ecosystems, water stratification and mixing associated with tidal currents play important factors in determining the short-term dynamics of phytoplankton. This study explored the influence of tides on the vertical distribution of phytoplankton related to the hydrodynamic gradients and associated environmental properties. Our results indicated that day-time solar heating and weak tidal current during the ebb tide resulted in a marked stratification in the water column. In contrast, night-time cooling and strong tidal current of the flood tide exhibited vertical mixing. If tidal mixing was not strong enough, the water column could not fully mix, and stratification remains in the upper layer. In our study, temperature and salinity gradients create density discontinuity water layers and a marked stratification in the water column which in turn shaped heterogeneous patterns in phytoplankton distribution. Moreover, the day-night cycle and transition from low to high tidal mixing conditions strongly influenced the habitat structure and composition of phytoplankton because each specific group of phyto-plankton responded to their preferred environmental conditions. For instance, diatoms can distribute in the deeper parts of the euphotic zone where dinoflagellates were rarely observed. During the survey period, chl-a concentration fluctuated with the abundance of aggregated particles. Bottom chl-a peak derived not only from the phytoplankton but also from the fluorescence of the aggregates.
