Description
This paper deals with the study of use of adverbs in Myanmar language by means of affixation and reduplication comparatively based on descriptive linguistics and semantic perspectives. The Myanmar language has the noun and the verb, two sharply distinguished classes and particles and affixes which are an assortment of grammatical morphemes and they play an important role in obtaining various kinds of grammatical classes and carry the bulk of meaning in Myanmar language. There are a lot of affixes in Myanmar grammatical area. This paper studies the common uses of affixes such as 'အ /a/ ၊ တ /ta/ ၊ မ/ma/ ' conveying the effective in meaning. Though adverbs in Myanmar can be derived by means of affixation, reduplication and rhyming systems from structural aspects, this paper bases on adverbs derived from affixation and reduplication systems. In the study, the data were collected from the lexicon from the Myanmar – Myanmar dictionary. The subjects of the study, the affixes ' အ /a/ , တ /ta/and မ/ma/ were analysed using the definitions from the ancient text on lexicography. The study argues that they also have a notable semantic load in addition to their grammatical load although they are functional words. It shows evidence of affixes changing the words into opposite meanings. It also shows that the reduplicated words have more phonetic loads but it does not contribute much to the meanings of words. This study shows that the degree of influence that affixes have on meanings can have impact on the depth of the meaning in applying the language. This purpose of this paper is to highlight how effective meaning is built by means of affixation and reduplication of adverbs and aims to explore the role of affixes in Myanmar adverbial structure.
