Funerals are `rites of passage\u0027 with three\r stages - separation, transition, and reintegration. In Mon\r funeral ritual, the deceased is placed on corpse’s shelter\r (Jaungnein in Mon) and a traditional spirit-basket\r (leikpyartaung) is placed at the head of the dead person. Mon\r funeral is supported by voluntary associations (Parahita).\r The Mon-nationals living in Hinthargone are found to be able\r to uphold their ethnic identity in terms of funeral ritual\r although their neighbourhood is occupied by non-Mons. The\r objectives of this paper are to elicit the celebration of Mon\r traditional funeral ritual in Hinthargon; to explore the\r influences of Mon identity on its funeral ritual; and to find\r out the relationships between funeral ritual and voluntary\r associations (Parahita). This study was conducted by\r ethnographic research method and descriptive study design.\r The study period was from 2009- 2012. In this study,\r interviews were made of Mon nationals who have knowledge\r and experience regarding Mon funeral, social welfare service\r associations\u0027 leaders and members through In-depth\r Interview and Key Informant Interview.
