This study is to identify the infrastructure development in Myanmar in general and Yangon Region in particular. It also assesses the impact of infrastructure development on household and industrial enterprise in Yangon Region. Survey was conducted by using simple random sampling method. The study overviews the infrastructure development of Myanmar and Yangon Region highlighting transport, electricity, telecommunications, water supply, sanitation, education and health infrastructures. Total infrastructure investment increases year by year, where economic infrastructure investment is higher than social infrastructure in both Yangon Region level and the national level, asserting that economic infrastructure investment was considered a priority. Investment in electricity infrastructure is of crucial importance for growing economic situation. Investment expenditure in electricity in Myanmar roughly increases about four times but in Yangon Region it increases only about two and half times that represents about 10percent of the total investment of the country in electricity. Electricity consumption, installed capacity and generation have increased throughout the years. The consumption in kilo watt hour increased two times during the period studied. However, per capita electricity consumption remains the lowest in Southeast Asia. Undesirable causes of electricity loss at region and national level have to be reviewed. Telecommunications sector is significantly underserved, with exceptionally low penetration rates given the size and market potential. The utilization of telecommunication system is still far behind of any ASEAN country, only about 2percent of its population had access to internet and about 50percent to mobile phones. Road transport still occupies its important role over other transport facilities. Railway infrastructure is encouraged through BOT schemes and PPPs. The government has extended and upgraded education system and the health sector quantitatively and qualitatively throughout the country. The overall finding of field survey regarding investment on infrastructure development in Yangon Region recommends the need for increased efficiencies and reprioritization of investment spending for infrastructure development in social sector at the Yangon Region level and at national level as well. The study summarizes that the existing infrastructure in Yangon Region fall short of the requirement and the potential contribution of infrastructure to economic growth has not been fully realized. |
