Description | ||||||
In Medieval Japan, we can study the individual characteristics of the Dragon Symbol which unite the characters of good and evil, or deity and devil Actually, a noteworthy aspect of the Dragon Symbol in this era is its unique cosmological aspects which are closely related to the notion of national territory. In order to consider and discuss this significant facet, we must turn our attention to the religious thoughts and territorial notions of Medieval Japan. In this respect, it was attempted to conduct an analytical and comparative study of the Dragon Symbol in Medieval Japan by focusing on the image of the Dragon as described in Gyoki-Zu (Gyoki-Zu) refers to old maps of Japan which feature unique characteristics illustrated as the figure of encircling by giant Dragon and take Gyoki's name (a Buddhist priest of high virtue in the Nara Period, AD 710-794). In this illustration it can be found the uniqueness of cosmological thought and territorial notions in Medieval Japan by analyzing the symbol of Dokko and the Dragon, which take on importance in Gyoki-Zu, They represent the "Central" or "Pivotal" sense of cosmology and so are used as the most appropriate metaphor to assert the "Central" or "Pivotal" notion of homeland or territory in Medieval Japan. In this paper, it was attempted to explain the uniqueness of cosmological and territorial notions in Medieval Japan in which indigenous Shintoism and Buddhism are adopted as Japanese syncretism from a new perspective. | ||||||
