Description
In this research work, five sediment samples1 from different stations of the Kandawgyi Lake were studied to investigate the existence of heavy metals contamination of the sediments. The concentration of heavy metals in sediment samples were measured by EDXRF method. When analyzing these sediment samples, Chromium (Cr), Manganese (Mn), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Z) and Lead (Pb) were found. To assess metal contamination in sediments, sediment quality guidelines of United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) were applied. According to the sediment quality guidelines, Cr is heavily polluted in sample S1. Sample S2, S3, S4 and S5 are moderately polluted. The element Cu is moderately polluted in sample S2 and sample S1, S3, S4 and S5 are nonpolluted. Other elements Ni, Zn and Pb are also non polluted. The observed degree of contamination is the range of 4.29. According to the degree of contamination values, the Kandawgyi Lake showed low degree of heavy metals contamination.
