Abstract The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is the most ambitious policy program of the People’s Republic of China. The BRI which was originally “One Belt, One Road” (OBOR), is focused on creating networks and connectivity that would allow for a more efficient and productive free flow of trade as well as further integration of international markets both physically and digitally. It is widely accepted that the BRI is a grand strategy for the rising power, China. The BRI was introduced by President Xi Jinping in September 2013 as a long-term development program along with two main routes- the new Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The participating countries have signed MOU and agreements to work under the BRI for developing infrastructure, industrial complexs and trading zones for the progress of their countries. Like many countries, Myanmar signed some agreements and joined BRI related projects in 2017. China encouraged Myanmar to be part of the BRI and welcomed its participation by highlighting closer cooperation and diplomacy. Based on the background, the objectives of the paper are to analyze policies and initiatives of China for the development of BRI and to find out its motivations for BRI. The analysis pointed out that the BRI is seriously carried out as a long- term strategic plan for Chinese national goals and its great power ambition in the future. The analysis highlighted that China has four major motivations. They are its domestic economic interests, the development of its western provinces, improving its international economic cooperation and enhancing its regional role in the Indo-Pacific region and Asia. |
