The\nrtain mechanism of AFTA is the Common Effective Preferential Tariff (CE,PT) scheme,\n*'hich aims to reduce intra-regional tariffs and remove non-tariff measllres Qr{TMs) within\na 1S-year period commencing on I January 1993.\nAfter more than l0 years of irnplementation, the achievement of the AFTA is still\nlimited since the share of intra-ASEAN trade has increased only three percent point from\n19.03 percent in 1993 to 22.25 percent in 2004. In the case of Myanmar, during a decade,\nits trade with ASEAN partners has doubled while its total trade value has risen 1.2 times.\nAlthough ASEAN is the main investor of Myanmar, FDI inflorvs liom ASEAN countries\nhave dramatically declined since the onset of the Asian financial crisis in mid-1997.\nThe pr,rrpose of this study is to analyze the impacts of AFTA on economic\nintegration process of ASEAN and Myanmar in terms of trade and investment during the\nperiod from1993 to 2004. Tire hypothesis of the study is that AIrTA has positive effects on\ntrade and ecottomic welfares of member countries. To confirm this hypothesis, subhypotheses\nare lbrmed and appropriate methodologies are also adopted to facilitate the\nresearch on both ASEAN and Myanmar.\nThe results of the study indicated the increasing trend of intra-regional trade and its\nimportance for ASEAN countries. The study showed that the implementation of AFTA,\nespecially the reduction in tariff rates, has positive impacts on raising share of intra-\nASEAN trade. AFTA has resulted in more trade creation than trade diversion and thereby,\nASEAN has enhanced the net welfare of member countries. In the case of Myanmar, the\nanalyses show that AFTA has positive effects on trade and investment of Myanmar in\nalmost pll aspects. Overall results of the study support the hypothesis that AFTA has\npositive effects on trade and economic welfares of member countries.\nHowever, AFTA has still had several problems which need to take immediate\nactions to improve and accelerate the economic integration process of ASEAN. The major\nproblems are relatively low share of intra-ASEAN trade and fluctuation of FDi inflows\nsince onset of Asian economic crisis. The outcomes of the study highlight the need for\n-{SEAN to accelerate its integration process through eliminating all baniers in trade and\nnvestment, adjusting policies, rules and regulation and narowing development gap between\nmember countries. These efforts will pave the way to further development of all member\ncountries and eventualiy, to achieve the goal of ASEAN Economic Community by 2020."}]},"item_1583103120197":{"attribute_name":"Files","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_access","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2023-02-24"}],"displaytype":"preview","filename":"Nu Nu Lwin, PhD-19.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"9.4 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_0","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"url":"https://meral.edu.mm/record/8761/files/Nu Nu Lwin, PhD-19.pdf"},"version_id":"bae61d9e-26d2-4b3f-a132-ea229cd0793b"}]},"item_1583103233624":{"attribute_name":"Thesis/dissertations","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_awarding_university":"Yangon Institute of Economics","subitem_supervisor(s)":[{"subitem_supervisor":"Dr. Khin San Yee"}]}]},"item_1583105942107":{"attribute_name":"Authors","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_authors":[{"subitem_authors_fullname":"Nu Nu Lwin"}]}]},"item_1583108359239":{"attribute_name":"Upload type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"interim":"Other"}]},"item_1583108428133":{"attribute_name":"Publication type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"interim":"Dissertation"}]},"item_1583159729339":{"attribute_name":"Publication date","attribute_value":"2006-12-01"},"item_title":"Asean's Economic Integration Under AFTA and Its Impact on Myanmar (Nu Nu Lwin, 2006)","item_type_id":"21","owner":"20","path":["1582963436320","1582965742757"],"publish_date":"2023-02-24","publish_status":"0","recid":"8761","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Asean's Economic Integration Under AFTA and Its Impact on Myanmar (Nu Nu Lwin, 2006)"],"weko_creator_id":"20","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2024-05-27T03:54:54.500458+00:00"}
