This study mainly investigated the importance of enlrepreneurial personality\ntraits and management competencies of owners-managers for the growth of small business. For\nthis purpose, 168 owners-managers in Yangon, were selected and analyzed. The reasons for\nstarting the business were dffirent among the otvners in accordance with their variotts motives.\nAmong them, the majority of owners do business to meet their basic physiological and security\nneeds. Consequently, tactics in starling business varied according to their motives and\ncircumstances. Out of the selected owners-managers, more lhan half of them founded new\nbusiness, some started the inheritedfirms, and small number of them continuedwith the existing\nones,\nAmong 168 small business owners-managers, 35 percent did not want to grow their\nbusinesses anymore and their goal of doing business is to generate regular income. Moreover,\nthe scale of personality traits is moderately low in each disposition; achievement motivation,\nrisk-taking propensity, preference for innovalion and proactive personality in line with their\ngoal. Though the remaining 65 percent had growth-oriented goal, their personality scales are\nmoderately high. Specifically, they have moderately high scores in achievement molivation, but\nmoderotely low in risk-taking propen,sity, preference for innovation and proactive personality.\nTherefitre, Myanmar enlrepreneurs moslly can be delennined as slability-bosed entrepreneurs\nand moderate risk-takers regarding the risk-taking propensity.\nThe level of selected owners-tnanagers'manogernent contpetencies is also related to the\nscale of their enlrepreneurial disposition.r. The rnost irnportant and capable competencies raled\n\"{rom the perception of respondenls v)ere establishing good human relationship, evaluating\nil\nbusiness, calculating gross and net profils, determining customer needs, and etc. On the other\nhand, del e gat in g respons i bi li t i e s,\nconducting markzt survey, establishing pricing policies, preparingfinancial statements and cash\nflows, preparing market plans and so on were rated from their perception as the lowest\nimportance and they also weak to be able to perform those compelencies. According to the\nfindings, the managemenl competency level of owners-tnanagers seems to be low because the\nmajority is doing their business depending much on the management compelencies which can be\nobtuinccl thruugh working experience and learning by doing and they became compelcnl laler.\nMctreovcr, selecletl firms were unalyzcd by thcir business attd lhe exlent of otvncr's\ninvolvement in business to determine firm's growth slage. The majority offirms vere doing lheir\nbusiness with hired professionals. Some were still solely taking all responsibilities. Only fetu\nfirms were running business with a management team and functional departments. Among them,\nthe younger firms were fast reaching at the higher grotvth stage. The reason of why the younger\n/irms grow faster than the older one is that lhe younger firms are tnore entrepreneurial in doing\nbusiness. These entrepreneurs founded with opportunistic approach and thus focused on fetu\ntarget markets through specific growth-oriented strategies.\nAccording to overall findings, the majority of surveyed firms and ov,ners-managers did\nnot hove some entrepreneurial personality lraits ond competency lo be delermined as\nentrepreneurial firm and entrepreneur, Entrepreneurial personality trails and ntanagerial\ncompelencies can be developed by education and trainings.
