The physico-chemical properties of natural and activated kaolins are determined by XRD, XRF and BET techniques and the bleaching capacities of those kaolins are measured by a  pectrophotometer. The optimum bleaching capacity (- 79%) was achieved by using 0.1 M oxalic acid with clay/acid ratio of 1:80, in which the value was slightly inferior to that of commercial bleaching clay  (-84%). Acid activation upon ground kaolin increased in surface area and mesopore content accompanied by a decrease in the alumina to silica ratio, leading to the enrichment of the silica phase in the tetrahedral sheet. It also increased in the proportion of mesopores in -40 A which is the proposed suitable range for the pigment molecules in the oil adsorbed onto the clay.
