There are some potential areas for deep sea port\nproject along Myanmar coastline. Due to the absence of long-term in-situ data and high\ncost of wave measurements, coastal engineers have to estimate wave characteristics using\na variety of methods, which involve empirical and numerical solutions. The main\npurpose of this research is to predict the wave characteristics for coastal regions of\nMyanmar by using a third-generation numerical wave model SWAN (Simulating WAves\nNearshore). In this article, the generation of waves by a constant wind filed blowing over\na fetch limited area is presented firstly and the results are compared with empirical\nformulae for validation. The simulated wave parameters are well agreed with the results\nfrom empirical equations. And then, numerical simulation is carried out with actual wind\nfield for the duration of average maximum wind speed in the Bay of Bengal in monsoon\nseason. The calculated results are compared with the ECMWF (European Centre for\nMedium-Range Weather Forecasts) ERA-Interim reanalysis data sets.
