King Badon (1782-1819) founded the City of\r Amarapura, the name referred to as the Immortal City. As the capital Amarapura developed,\r many religious monuments-pagodas, temples, rest-houses (zayat), monasteries, etc were built\r at and around Amarapura. These religious monuments were built by the royalty, the nobility\r as well as by commoners. The pagodas well known today as the Four Great Pagodas are: The\r Shwe Gu Gyi Pagoda, the Taung Min Gyi Pagoda, the Pahtotawgyi Pagoda and the\r Taungthaman Kyauktawgyi Pagoda. The largest Buddhist monuments are found to the\r southwest of the palace site. All of them were built in the glorious period of Amarapura (A.D.\r 1784-1858). From A.D. 1784-1858 Amarapura was the religious centre for propagation,\r perpetuation and purification of the Buddha Sasana.
