Back-propagation (BP)uses two phases, feed-forward and backpropagate,for learning the weights in the networkand training multilayer feed-forward network.Themain disadvantage of the back-propagationalgorithm is its convergence rate is slow and it isalways being trapped in local minima. Differentialevolution (DE) algorithm is a population basedalgorithm like genetic algorithms using similaroperators; crossover, mutation and selection. Inthis paper, the performance of DE algorithm iscompared to BP algorithm. From theexperimental results, it was observed that theaccuracy of DE is better than BP.This paperevaluates the performance of two algorithms byusing hold out validation method and then showsthe comparison results with bar chart. IRIS, breastcancer and wine data set from UCI - University ofCalifornia at Irvine (Machine LearningRepositories and Domain Theories) is applied forclassification.
