Despite its historical importance, the island \nfaces a critical issue of plastic debris pollution, affecting both open beach areas and vital turtle \nnesting habitats. The research aimed to address this problem and provide scientific information for \nsea turtle conservation at Thameehla Kyun W.S. The objectives of the study are to identify and \nquantify macro-sized plastic litter and its composition on nesting beaches, to investigate the source \nand areas of influence of plastic pollution, and to assess the potential impacts of plastic pollution \non sea turtle nesting sites and processes. Plastic samples were collected using the line transect \nmethod, covering approximately 10% of the study area across two beaches. A total of 1057 plastic \nlitters were recorded, with foam items being the most abundant (20.00%), followed by plastic \nfragments (17.00%), fishing-related items (15.00%), and plastic bottles (11.00%). Educational \nitems were the least abundant. Litter density was calculated at 5.06/m² for Sathaphoo Beach and \n1.2/m² for Thanban Beach. The statistical model estimated 8037.2 litters for Sathaphoo Beach and \n3276 litters for Thanban Beach in the study area. Comparing the two beaches, Sathaphoo Beach \nhad significantly higher litter abundance, raising concerns more about the impact on sea turtle \nnesting habitats. This number is considered high compared to other areas in the region. The \nresearch indicated the facts that the surrounding sea of the island is a fishing ground area, its \nlocation is near the mouth of the Pathein River, the presence of fishing villages along the adjacent \ncoast, and the month-long Mawtin Pagoda festival collectively contribute a significant amount of \nplastic waste to the island. In addition, the island will be impacted by plastic waste through the \ninfluence of sea currents and weather patterns. Observations of nesting sea turtles in the study area \nrevealed several attempts to dig nest holes, frequent shifts in nest sites, and taken longer period \nspent at a particular nest, all potentially influenced by the presence of litters on nesting beaches.\nThe study concluded by highlighting the scale of the litter problem in these areas, emphasizing the \nabundance of foam items, plastic fragments, fishing-related items, and plastic bottles, pose a threat \nto nesting beaches reducing habitat reproduction and nesting success. Therefore, urgent actions \n(e.g., through a wide range of public awareness initiatives such as newspaper and journal articles,\nsocial media campaign and regular beach cleaning activities through community involvement) and \nconcerted efforts (e.g., habitat conservation, research & monitoring on sea turtle nesting) are \nnecessary to mitigate the impacts of plastic pollution and safeguard the nesting habitats of sea \nturtles for their survival and the health of marine ecosystems. As a final conclusion, the present \nresearch will support as scientific information and plans to safeguard sea turtle nesting habitats, \nand it will also guide future studies in this field."}]},"item_1583103108160":{"attribute_name":"Keywords","attribute_value_mlt":[{"interim":"plastic"},{"interim":"pollution"},{"interim":"nesting"},{"interim":"beach"},{"interim":"green turtle"},{"interim":"marine ecosystem"}]},"item_1583103120197":{"attribute_name":"Files","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_access","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2025-01-24"}],"displaytype":"preview","filename":"DrKoMyint_JARC_Vol10.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"864 KB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_0","url":{"url":"https://meral.edu.mm/record/10702/files/DrKoMyint_JARC_Vol10.pdf"},"version_id":"726b845d-9c70-4975-83b3-0acb9f79200e"}]},"item_1583103131163":{"attribute_name":"Journal articles","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_issue":"2024","subitem_journal_title":"Journal of Asia Research Centre, University of Yangon","subitem_pages":"P.10-20","subitem_volume":"Vol.10, No. 1 & 2, 2024"}]},"item_1583105942107":{"attribute_name":"Authors","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_authors":[{"subitem_authors_fullname":"Ko Myint"},{"subitem_authors_fullname":"Thin Thin Soe"}]}]},"item_1583108359239":{"attribute_name":"Upload type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"interim":"Publication"}]},"item_1583108428133":{"attribute_name":"Publication type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"interim":"Journal article"}]},"item_1583159729339":{"attribute_name":"Publication date","attribute_value":"2024-10-31"},"item_title":"A Study of Plastic Pollution Affecting the Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches at Thameehla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary in Ngaputaw Township, Ayeyarwady Delta","item_type_id":"21","owner":"235","path":["1598263053473"],"publish_date":"2025-01-24","publish_status":"0","recid":"10702","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["A Study of Plastic Pollution Affecting the Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches at Thameehla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary in Ngaputaw Township, Ayeyarwady Delta"],"weko_creator_id":"235","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2025-01-24T05:09:08.711531+00:00"}
