Nation Building Task: Internship Program for Students of University of Computer Studies, Yangon

In the 21st Century, the demand of experiencedand educated workers has increasingly become inworking environment and higher institutions likeuniversities play a central role in nurturing thequalified students. In this context, the students fromUniversity of Computer Studies, Yangon, needtraining to apply efficiently their soft skills as well ashard skills. They are expected to construct the Smalland Medium Enterprise (SME) if they realise thecontrast of theoretical knowledge and hands-onexperience before they hunt job in the real world. Itmeans that before completing their Bachelor Degree,the university makes the internship program for them.Students are sent to the industries or companies andthey are really engaged to the business fields orworkplace. On this occasion, the engaged learningprogramme, as a theoretical background, is requirednot only for the students but for the faculty members ofthe university who involves teaching-learningsituation. For language teachers especially those whoare teaching English need to change their curriculumin order to meet the current situation. In previoussemesters, the IELTS was prescribed starting from thefirst year level to the final year level, but since 2016-17 academic year, the 21st century communicationskills have been conducted in the final year. It can befound that students become interested incommunication skills and they also motivate in theirEnglish language learning. Communicative LanguageTeaching method has been used to teach authentictexts and to converse about learners' personalexperiences. Students are grouped in discussion anddebates, which promotes their four skills. The studentscan also utilize the communication skills in theirreport writing and project after they complete internprogramme. The aim of this paper is to enhance thestudents’ performance by developing curriculum thatcan support in their learning and provide real needs.In other words, by means of engaged learning andintern programme, the capacity of human resourcescan be effectively built and it can be said thatcurriculum development is associated with thedevelopment of a society, a community, or a country.
