Effective Learning for Higher Education Using Jigsaw Approach

The use of cooperative and active learningapproach is an important role for education system.Although the cooperative technique, Jigsaw have beenaccepted and applied in many countries’ educationalenvironment over the several years, there has been a littleapplied area in Myanmar educational system. This study hasbeen performed on the first-year students of the University ofComputer Studies, Yangon (UCSY) in the course of Principleof Information Technology for first semester in 2018-2019academic year. As a case study design, a total of 42 studentshave been participated in this study. The aim of this studywas to reveal the effectiveness of Jigsaw technique in highereducation system in Myanmar. Experiment was performedusing Jigsaw technique and then compared to the traditionalteaching technique to the courses. The average score of thestudents using Jigsaw technique, student centered strategy, isimproved over the traditional teaching technique, teachercentered strategy. It was observed that the cooperative andactive learning technique, Jigsaw is effective in the learningprocess of the theoretical courses, in the development ofcritical thinking skill, communication skills, interpersonalskills and an increases enjoyment of the learning experience.The student interest was significantly improved rather thanthe traditional learners. Moreover, the students reported thatthey enjoyed the Jigsaw method and they are willing to applyJigsaw method to another course.
