The Concept of Gratitude in Myanmar Ethical Thought Lay Nwe The word 'gratitude' means the awareness of one's obligation to another person who has previously done some act of kindness towards one. From the Buddhist point of view the Pæli word kataññuta is gratitude. The word kanññuta consists of two parts: kata means that which has been especially done to one or to oneself; and ahnuta means knowing or recognizing what has been done to one for one's benefit. In common sense, if a person does and repays gratitude to others, he would be regarded as a morally good person. In this paper, gratitude will be discussed as a moral concept of Myanmar Buddhist society.
