Myanmar and Environmental Conservation Myat Myat Kyaw The concept of Environmental Conservation has been existed since the monarchical period. Myanmar kings had faithfully carried out environmental protection. Old irrigation works were maintained, and new ones were constructed. By royal order, parks and sanctuaries were created. In Myanmar, the National Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA) formulated Myanmar Agenda 21 in 1997 and it was the expression of the political commitments by the government for achieving sustainable development and environmental conservation in Myanmar. It is intended to serve as a framework for integrating environmental considerations into future national development plans as well as for sectoral development programmes.
