<dc:title>Entrepreneurs in Myanmar Private Small Business(A Study of 168 Firms in Yangon Municipal Area) (Soe Thu, 2007)</dc:title>
          <dc:creator>Soe Thu</dc:creator>
<dc:description>The objectives of this study are lo determine the reasons of starting otvn business Jbr
entrepreneurs who emerged in the transitional process from planned economy into markel
economy, to explore their entrepreneurship process by measuring the scale of entrepreneurial
personality dispositions and level of monagement cornpetencies and to identify their firms'
growth stages. This study mainly investigated the importance of enlrepreneurial personality
traits and management competencies of owners-managers for the growth of small business. For
this purpose, 168 owners-managers in Yangon, were selected and analyzed. The reasons for
starting the business were dffirent among the otvners in accordance with their variotts motives.
Among them, the majority of owners do business to meet their basic physiological and security
needs. Consequently, tactics in starling business varied according to their motives and
circumstances. Out of the selected owners-managers, more lhan half of them founded new
business, some started the inheritedfirms, and small number of them continuedwith the existing
ones,
Among 168 small business owners-managers, 35 percent did not want to grow their
businesses anymore and their goal of doing business is to generate regular income. Moreover,
the scale of personality traits is moderately low in each disposition; achievement motivation,
risk-taking propensity, preference for innovalion and proactive personality in line with their
goal. Though the remaining 65 percent had growth-oriented goal, their personality scales are
moderately high. Specifically, they have moderately high scores in achievement molivation, but
moderotely low in risk-taking propen, sity, preference for innovation and proactive personality.
Therefitre, Myanmar enlrepreneurs moslly can be delennined as slability-bosed entrepreneurs
and moderate risk-takers regarding the risk-taking propensity.
The level of selected owners-tnanagers'manogernent contpetencies is also related to the
scale of their enlrepreneurial disposition.r. The rnost irnportant and capable competencies raled
"{rom the perception of respondenls v)ere establishing good human relationship, evaluating
il
business, calculating gross and net profils, determining customer needs, and etc. On the other
hand, del e gat in g respons i bi li t i e s,
conducting markzt survey, establishing pricing policies, preparingfinancial statements and cash
flows, preparing market plans and so on were rated from their perception as the lowest
importance and they also weak to be able to perform those compelencies. According to the
findings, the managemenl competency level of owners-tnanagers seems to be low because the
majority is doing their business depending much on the management compelencies which can be
obtuinccl thruugh working experience and learning by doing and they became compelcnl laler.
Mctreovcr, selecletl firms were unalyzcd by thcir business attd lhe exlent of otvncr's
involvement in business to determine firm's growth slage. The majority offirms vere doing lheir
business with hired professionals. Some were still solely taking all responsibilities. Only fetu
firms were running business with a management team and functional departments. Among them,
the younger firms were fast reaching at the higher grotvth stage. The reason of why the younger
/irms grow faster than the older one is that lhe younger firms are tnore entrepreneurial in doing
business. These entrepreneurs founded with opportunistic approach and thus focused on fetu
target markets through specific growth-oriented strategies.
According to overall findings, the majority of surveyed firms and ov,ners-managers did
not hove some entrepreneurial personality lraits ond competency lo be delermined as
entrepreneurial firm and entrepreneur, Entrepreneurial personality trails and ntanagerial
compelencies can be developed by education and trainings. And, small businesses had nalttral
barriers lo access required resources such as lechnical ossislance, financial aids, and
information and network necessary for crealive thinking and innovation,
A supportive environment wilh entrepreneurial educctlion progranlmes organized by
policy makers was suggested to impletnenl for the developntent of entrepreneurship and small
business management in Myanmar.</dc:description>
