contribute in an economy. SMEs can provide competitive advcmtages and they are flexible
enough to re,spttnd quickly to market changes and technological clevelopment. However,
SMEs have v'eaknesse,t compared to large enterprises, such as' lcick of Jinancial sources,
inability to axploit econornies o.f scale and less capital intensive tccl.tnologt. Thus, the longterm
viability oJ Sl,[[s clepends on sound policies.
In cvar), country, the role of SMEs is crucial for the ecunomic development and
industrializctliott. In Japan, Soulh Korea, ASEAN etc., SMEs cu'e looked to as major job
sources due to tlte labor-intensive nature of their v,ork. |-here has been rapid
industrializatiort and export oriented systems attached to SMEs in /lta ,,1SEAN countries since
the 1980s. Although SfulEs cqn generate employment for the y,ork frtrce, majority of them
have limitcttiott.s. Especially the SMEs have the intention for receiving international
exposures and ltarticipating in lhe modern industrial econonty. This can be achieved only
through the s'&lt;strtrcl policiesfor the development of SMEs in the rcspcctit,e countries.
This s'tucly examines the policies ancl practices for tlrc tie,-elopment of SMEs. It
discovers thot tlrc supporting policies are influence on the grotr,th oJ SMEs. Therefore, the
supporting polic'ic,s are found to be one oJ" ihe most itttportont cleterminants for the
developntent o./' ,St\,!Es. Since Mycmntar being the mentber of lSli.4N and participating in
AFTA process, il i,t ttilal to haye sound policies that support thr: ,\t\,tEs for thetr business
